Congratulations to PRICELESS HFACT lead Dr Karen Hofman for recently being honoured with a Gold Medal for her application of scientific thinking in the service of society. Her efforts have resulted in an increase in health for people in South Africa.

Dr Hofman advocated the Health Promotion Levy – or sugar tax – based on rigorous scientific research on the benefits of reducing the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages to advance public health. 

Dr Hofman has also extensively researched universal health coverage, focusing on priority-setting, which has been an essential implement to sustainable National Health Insurance (NHI) in South Africa.
